Montane Walking Track - Dinner Plain - Grade 3 day walk
This is a grade 3 day walk total distance 15km
We will be departing from the Baranduda Scout Hall on the Kiewa Valley Highway at Baranduda at 6.30am with a coffee stop at Myrtleford on the way to Dinner Plain.
The walk starts at the Forest Walks trailhead on the north side of the Great Alpine Road at the Dinner Plain village. We walk along a section of the Montane Loop to reach the start of the Montane Walking Track. The section of the track, between Montane Loop and Slippery Pitch, offers great views of Mt. Bogong and Mt. Cope and is 3.3 km in length. We cross over the Great Alpine way at Slippery Pitch and start the second section of the walk. This section of land is under grazing lease and we pass cattle yards which were built in the early part of the 20th century. The section between Slippery Pitch and the 3rd section of the Montane Walking track is 3.2 km. At the junction we will walk to Precipice Plain Lookout and back which offers great views of Precipice Plain which is private land, about 2 kms. From the junction its a further 2.5 kms will get us to the Carmichael Falls turn off. We will walk down to the falls about 1 km. The Falls was named after the governor of Victoria Sir Thomas Gibson Carmichael who visited the area in 1911. From the falls back to the Forest Walks trailhead where we parked is about 3km. Total distance 15km.
