Kayak - Killara to Wonga Wetlands
PLEASE NOTE
Cost of hire is $30 and pizza $8
Sasho and Tony did the trip on Wed Jan 7 2015 - it took us 4 hours with just a short break - the Kiewa is lower than last year and a tree over the creek made it a bit more difficult but we dragged boat over the log. Had to do a portage in the Carrolls Creek as there was too much debris to keep paddling in one spot - probably will be the same on sat.
Regarding rain there is rain forecast it will also be pretty warm so we are not thinking of cancelling cos of weather at this stage.
We are planning pizza lunch ($8) at Diamond Park on the causeway - tables and shade but no toilet which is a bummer!
Sit on kayak hire is $30
Killara to Wonga Wetlands kayak trip - we enjoyed this event put on by Tony Crawford in Jan 2014 and 2015
We will hire sit ons from Dave Breedon who will meet us at Noreuil Park Cumberoona Wharf and transport us to Killara
If you want to use your own boat you will need to make arrangements yourself for transport to Killara and from Wonga Wetlands
Dave will then pick us and the boats up at Wonga Wetlands
Total stream length is 17km - about 3-4 hours paddling full of variety and excitement
Streams we will be exploring are:
Kiewa River 5km
Murray River 1km
Wodonga Creek 7km
Carrolls Creek 3km
Dead River (old Murray R channel) 1km
We have arranged a lunch spot approx. 10km into the trip on the Wodonga creek where we will have pizzas delivered - please tell us if you have dietary preferences
The trip is not for beginners due to it's duration and river hazards such as the numerous snags and willows in the Kiewa and fast currents most likely to be experienced in the Wodonga Creek. Double canoes would not be suitable.
We will meet at Cumberoona Wharf Noreuil Park at 8.00am; embark at 9.00am from Killara on the Kiewa River; lunch for up to an hour from 11.30pm at Diamond Park on Wodonga Creek on the Lincoln Causeway; arrive at Dead River near Wonga Wetlands at around 2pm; returning to Noreuil Park by 3-00pm.
