The Murray River is My Healing Place by Lin Starke
There is no cure left
Unwellness increasing
Gratitude expressed for time together
Loving words with deepest meaning
His time had come
Farewell one morning
When the ritual gathering was over
I followed my furniture north
To another city
Scarcely familiar
Unpacked boxes waiting
No one known
There was now a challenge
To Re-build myself
Start anew
But how?
Build a support network
Enter the community
Volunteering
Seeking employment
Joining groups
What to do, where to start
Piecing together options.
Making them happen
Finding markets, chatting at a stand
A walking group, come canoeing too they said
And so began my river adventure
Drills for Safety, sun protection
Feeling well welcomed
Being passenger in front for familiarisation
On the water my spirit lifted
I could chat, and paddle
In the midst of a group
Well supported
Strangeness easing
Adrenaline rush
Enjoy the evening light
The calming water flowing by
Flora, birds and creatures studied
Curiosity replacing sadness
A profound feeling of being at peace with nature
I am smiling
Now paddling regularly
At home on the water
Remembering another craft,
Fishing In my homeland
A member now of the group
Comradeship growing
A memory of a day at a travel fair in Auckland
Boxes for entry to trips
A phone call, you have won
Five days four nights on a houseboat
Echuca Moama, Murray River
Flooded river when we tourists got here
Pictures, memories, holiday.
The battle with loneliness softened
Albury Wodonga a place where I am at peace
Water flowing past, new memories growing
A barbecue in the park later
The gentle touch of a friend on my shoulder
No longer alone
The water has helped me heal
Water, land, sea and mountains
Are the representatives
Of timelessness
There before humans
A forever we can’t comprehend
Water is flowing in a natural rhythm
Its current becomes my current
Its softness suits my mood
It soothes with its gurgling
It is harmony and nature
The tears no longer flow
I am healed when on the water
In Maoridom there are many Gods,
But I relate to their belief
In the power of nature
It is a life force
Canoeing The Mighty Murray is a link reminding me
How when I snorkelled I became a part of the water.
I canoe between mountains Papatuanuku, Mother Earth
Tane Mahuta, God of the forest and all that dwell within
Tangaroa, God of the sea, rivers, lakes and all that live in them
And Ranginui Father sky, and Rongo ma tane
The source of cultivated plants and food
My journey is through many powerful elements, it heals
When we end our canoe journey
I can see my companions too
Are energised, revitalised
The magic and charm of the river
Has bonded our group, I am a friend among friends
Spiritual wellness, intellectual wellness, physical wellness in balance.
