Murray Valley Bushwalkers Inc Bulletin #88 March 13 2014
Welcome to New Member
Welcome to Ross Mitchell who is our latest member and has participated in several after work paddling events already.
Farewell to our Treasurer
Lena Sandstrom our treasurer has moved to Sydney for employment and we wish her well and hope we can catch up sometime to do some of the wonderful walks that Sydney has to offer. Thanks to Lin Starke for a fantastic effort making a trip to Sydney to help Lena move all her belongings and get her setup in her new residence.
Mt Lawson – Kurrajongs revegetation project
The Mt Lawson friends group has been awarded a grant under the Department of Environment and Primary Industries Communities for Nature grants program to cover revegetation and other improvements to the Kurrajongs visitor area, on the Murray River Road near Thologolong which is about 70km north east of Wodonga.
This is the start of the Flaggy Creek walk on Mt Lawson that some of our members may know.
The first step will involve the collection and propagation of locally native seeds, and on Sunday 30 March there will be an “education day” at the Kurrajongs when John Palmer of Upper Murray Gro will talk about the process of seed collection and give some guidance on plant identification. It is also planned to install sediment traps in the creek for erosion control. Anyone with an interest in seed collection, or getting involved in the revegetation project is welcome to attend. A BBQ will be provided.
Contact Andrew Kingerlee (02) 6056 7345 for start time or further details
Kiewa and Murray Rivers - Public Access
Murray River Parklands is envisioned as a multi-use recreational, environmental, heritage and tourist resource occupying the Crown water frontages and Crown road reserves from Lake Hume, east of Wodonga in City of Wodonga, through to Wahgunyah Township in Indigo Shire. However both of these councils have blocked development of this visionary plan by refusing to open publicly owned access roads (owned by the Crown) to the public. We think its time we let the councils know that its in the best interest of everyone that our community has improved access to our rivers.
If you are interested in finding out more about this and what we can do about it contact Tony for more information.
Parklands Albury Wodonga Fishy Trail Run/Walk April 6th
PAW are a not for profit organisation who do wonderful work to develop and promote public usage of the parks we have in Albury Wodonga. The Fishy Trail Run event is an opportunity to experience sections of the Wodonga Creek that are normally closed to public access. You may want to register to walk the event or support the event by volunteering to help as water point marshals or with recording participant times from 9.30am to midday on Sunday April 6th. More information can be found on the PAW website here - if you want to volunteer your services let Tony know.

Tuesday Mornings in Summer Hans Half Day Walks
Since Jan 7th Hans has led an amazing 10 popular and easy Tuesday morning walks hugging the Murray River or along the shores of Lake Hume. He has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and a host of great photos which you can see on the clubs Flickr site by clicking on the photo below. If you are lucky enough to have Tues mornings free then there is another event coming up next Tuesday 18th March to Lake Hume south of Bellbridge
Thurs Feb 18 to March 13 Canoeing After Work

Sat Feb 15th Montane Walking Track Dinner Plain
Neil planned and led this walk which featured the Carmichael Falls on a wet day at Dinner Plain
Feb 22 - Mar 2 Snowy Mountains 8 Day Backpack
Four members completed this walk from Kiandra to Guthega in generally excellent weather conditions over 8 days - Tony's sister Jean is in training for the 3 week coast to coast walk in England in May and will probably find it a breeze after a week of off track walking in the Snowy Mountains! We carried packs for 92 km, two thirds of it off track and visited 10 historic and rebuilt huts. The highlight of the trip for me was visiting the last remaining gold miners hut - 4 Mile Hut - reading the amazing efforts of a couple of NPWS rangers to save the hut from bushfire and exploring in detail the Elaine gold mining area near Kiandra. Thanks heaps to Peter Presutti for providing transport support for this event. Click the photo below to view the collection for this event.
Feb 22 Canoe Day Trip from Noreuil Park to Richardson Bend
4 members led by Tracey completed this delightful paddle in superb weather conditions. This leaves just one section of the river (from Richardsons Bend to Howlong) to complete the full length of the river from the weir wall to Lake Mulwala for our most experienced team of canoeists.
March 2 Mt Buffalo NP Giants Playground and Dicksons Falls
Hans led a group to one of his favorite haunts on Mt Buffalo - clearly he didn't tell anyone that the Giants under investigation had 8 legs!
March 8-9 Mt Bogong Conquestathon Event
Four members walked Mt Bogong via Granite Flat Spur on the saturday camped near the summit and then provided support for this wonderful event on the sunday. All 170 participants successfully completed the 20km walk with 1300 metres of climbing.

Murray Valley Bushwalkers Inc Bulletin #87 Feb 10 2014
Welcome to New and Renewing Members
Last bulletin I reported we were on the cusp of a century of members - well I can now report we have well and truly leapt over that milestone with an amazing 8 new members in the last fortnight - ok 5 of them are from the one family but who's counting? No need to answer that cos clearly I am! Welcome to the club Heidi Neumeister and to Colleen and Theo Richter plus David Saxton, Nicole Stephens, Eliza Stephens, Fiona Saxton and Robert Saxton. What is it about paddling on the Murray in the height of summer that draws so many people to our club? Are we a global warming success story? Don't answer that question either cos an artefact of global warming is something we just don't want to be!
Committee Meeting
The 3rd meeting for the year was held on the evening of Feb 5th at our favorite location - the Thurgoona Community Centre. Click here to access the minutes of this meeting.
However both of these councils have blocked development of this visionary plan by refusing to open publicly owned access roads (owned by the Crown) to the public for walkers. We think its time we let the councils know that its in the best interest of everyone that our community had access greater access to our rivers. Below is a list of public roads that give great access to the rivers but that we are currently barred from using. We will be reporting on developments in future bulletins.
Pollards Road Bonegilla - COW
Chappel Road Baranduda - COW
Jenkins Road Tangambalanga - Indigo Shire
Sheathers Road West Wodonga – COW
Goynes Road West Wodonga – COW
Snowdons Road Bonegilla -COW

Tues Jan 28th Murray River Victorian Side
Hans led a group of 6 along this wonderful track that is seldom used. Its an easy walk and being close to the river has lots of wildlife and flora to enjoy. Click the photo to see more pics of this walk.
Thurs Jan 30 After Work Paddle #11
Jan led this event that follows on from paddle on the 23rd a hard act to follow because we saw two possibly three platypus - great to see our secretary Lin confidently paddling a single sit on kayak and declaring it her favorite Murray River paddling experience.
Sun Feb 2 Mt Tabletop near Hotham Heights day walk
Due to dangerous fire risk conditions Mick Webster chose to postpone this day walk in the Victorian Alps to Mt Tabletop near Mt Hotham - it is rescheduled for March 15 - click here for more details and to join
Tues Feb 4 Hume Weir Half Day Walk Grade 2
Hans led a group of 4 members on this half day stroll along the shores of Hume Weir from Bethanga Bridge to Hume Village and apparently a delightful walk it was! It also was a very civilised walk: toilets and a cup of coffee at Hume Village, ripe blackberries along the way back. Surf's up at Lake Hume!
Thurs Feb 6 Canoeing After Work #12
Another great evening paddle and dinner at the Farmers Market featuring Bangladeshi food was enjoyed by 16 people - we think that walks like Hans's Hume Weir stroll and this kind of paddling event defines the objectives of our club - events that encourage people to exercise while at the same time being popular, inclusive, fun and multi faceted.
Feb 8-9 Overnight paddle with a camp on the river
This event was postponed due to the extreme heat last weekend - hopefully it will be rescheduled soon as its the last section of the river from Hume Weir to Lake Mulwala to be completed by our hardy group of overnight paddlers.

Murray Valley Bushwalkers Inc Bulletin #86 Jan 26 2014
Well we survived that heat wave in the second week of January - and what a week it was hopefully not one to be repeated any time soon. You wont be surprised to hear that canoeing on the Murray Jan 16 was a very popular activity - we had 16 paddlers doing their best to chill out.
You probably also guessed we had to cancel an event in line with our risk management policies.
We hope Tracey will be able to reschedule the wonderful huts walk on the Bogong High Plains in more amenable weather conditions.
And unfortunately Peter's long weekend Falls Creek to Hotham and return walk had to also be postponed due to injury - we trust Peter is back firing on all cylinders again soon.
Welcome to New and Renewing Members
Welcome to our newest member - Pauline Banfield - I erroneously messaged Pauline gleefully telling her she was the 100th member - in fact she is the 99th! sorry Pauline I will make it up to you somehow! So who will be the 100th? Hopefully I can report on this in the next bulletin. All of our members have joined using the new system which gives a full 12 months financial status regardless of the date people join. Also the new system will remind you when your subscriptions are due again.
Committee Meeting
The next meeting will be held on the evening of Feb 5th at our favorite location - the Thurgoona Community Centre. Nothing to do? Feel free to join us to see how the club functions as a well oiled machine despite the fact that we have only 4 committee meetings a year!
What We've Been Up To Since Last Bulletin!
Thurs Jan 16th After Work Paddle
Yes as promised it was hot - very hot in fact - perfect conditions for an evening paddle and definitely not too hot for a paddle with dad!
Thurs Jan 23rd After Work Paddle
Platypus or to be more accurate platypi were spotted on this event which as usual was another delightful evening paddle and BBQ - some people have all the luck! The photo shows Dave sending us off on yet another Murray River Canoe Hire sponsored event. It does look like Cheryl is still recovering her balance from a massive push off doesn't it!
Wed Jan 22nd Howmans Gap Circuit
Neil and Tony completed this exploratory or "recce" walk - in case you are wondering what this strange term is it has nothing to do what some people get up to on a Sat night (thats a wreckie) and everything to do with the delightful French word reconnoiter or reconnaissance. That is - checking out an event in advance for degree of difficulty, distance, hazards etc before the actual event is scheduled. And scheduled it will be as its one of the best kept secrets of the Bogong High Plains.
Sunday Jan 26 The Huts Circuit Mt Hotham
As you read Neil and three others are completing this fantastic 21km walk in what should be great conditions - we look forward to his photos and report in the next bulletin.
