What We've Been Up To
Canoeing
The after work canoeing program on Thursdays has been extraordinarily well supported - with three more thursdays before daylight savings finishes we are on target to have a perfect score of 24/24 after work paddling events events over a 6 month period.
We are planning a pizza night to finish off the season - regardless of whether you are paddler or not you will be welcome to join us of course.
A recent saturday paddle from Noreuil Park to Richardsons Bend had 6 participants. 10 participants are booked in for a paddle on the Mitta River with Sasho on March 22.
Half day walks
The Tuesday morning walk to Yackandandah saw 3 walkers, who enjoyed nature and history (and the cup of coffee at the end!).
Backpacking
A special backpacking trip to Mt Bogong was undertaken by 5 MVB members to assist in the running of the 37th Mt Bogong Conquestathon - a charity fund raising event run by Upper Kiewa Lions Club.
We hope we can continue to provide the support required to run this magnificent event which drew about 260 participants of all ages - 7 to 75 at least.
Whats On!
A very interesting event on the program is the walk: "Above the trees, a hidden waterfall and 1000 metres downhill". The views from Spion Kopje should be spectacular, and if you're scared of the 1000 metres downhill, going to Spion Kopje and returning to the start is an option! It is not too late to book for this great walk! Hope to see you on Sunday!
If you like camping, there are a few car camps on the program, including one for the paddlers.
You also will see daywalks appearing in faraway places, if you like to fly to Cairns, Darwin, Alice Springs etc. transport to the start of the walk can be arranged.
Browse the program and click a link to find out more and/or join an even

Members and Guests Night May 21
Thursday 21st May 7 PM at the Thurgoona Community Center.
This is a good chance to catch up with other club members and find out what they have been up to - bring a guest or friend they will be very welcome.
For participants in the Larapinta track walk starting June 6 this is a great opportunity to get together to sort a few things out.
We have a DVD to show called Beneath the Razorback, this was made after the 2003 fires that ravaged the area. The story focuses on the gold mining efforts of the 1950's and beyond and goes for about 45 minutes. The photo below isn't quite from the 50s but it is 40 years ago and it is the razorback and one of the walkers is a current member of MVB!
- There will also be a slide show organised by Lin Starke highlighting club activities.
- Peter will give a very brief talk on dehydrating food for backpacking.
- A small supper, with tea and or coffee will be provided
And speaking of hydration and exercise..according to Coach James Fisher you should
Drink Before You’re Thirsty!!
Thirst is an early symptom of dehydration. By the time the thirst response is activated, you’re already 2 to 3 percent dehydrated. This will diminish high-intensity endurance by 10 percent. Start your walk, paddle, cycle or ski hydrated by consuming up to 600ml of water about 2 hours before exercise. During the activity, a good goal is to drink up to 300ml of water or sports drink every 15 to 20 minutes. Recover by drinking up to 500ml of water or sports drink every hour for a few hours afterwards to fully rehydrate. ( And dont stray too far from the toilet! ed note)
Event reports
There are five new event reports available on the website - you may like to check them out - click on any of the photos to read an event report

Manjar Trail Kosciusko National Park led by Iris Joss
Forest Camp Easter Warby Ovens National Park led by Tony Marsh
Mitta Mitta River Day Paddle March 22 led by Sasho Dillow
Welcome to new members
Iris Joss, Sharon Roberts, Carmen Huser and Stephen Gulliford - membership steady on 108
We are thrilled to have new members from the Upper Murray / Corryong district since Easter 2015. You will notice events led by Iris Joss and Barbara Williams on the program in the future and president Jan Douglas joined Iris on the recent long day walk along Harrington track and Barbara and Lee joined the Flaggy Creek walk on May9.
Website Upgrade
The ordeal of upgrading the website to work properly with the latest version of Joomla has finally been successfully negotiated without loss of any historical data - all events, reports, forms, subscriptions and even records of bookings (potentially required for insurance claims) have been moved to the new system. We haven't lost any members along the way either although those involved in the 5 month upgrade process were sorely tested. Security considerations were the main driving factor - the club takes its responsibilities seriously in regard to privacy of members data.

We have added a new menu to the Programs Tab *** List of Events 2014 Check it out ** outstanding range.
To comment and or highlight all would be a monumental task and i am not going to attempt this.
Jan , Tony , Jean , Louise traversed some very spectacular section of the Kosciusko National Park, I went with the team to make transport easy on their return home. 12 hour drive for me from Albury to Guthega around to Jyndabyne and dropoff at Mt Sewlyn. and for me a drive home via Cabramurra Corryong and home. Oh so many trips to Falls Creek snow fields giving our new snow shoes a good workout.
Some of our very keen hikers tried to rename a mountain to Pain Mountain. (actually a monolith bigger that Uluru and located in the Corryong area).
and the next day ventured to Bluff Falls and onto Campbell lookout, absolutely amazing terrain. and so close to home.
I missed out on an interesting section of the Hume and Hovell Walking Track from Henry Angel track head Tumbarumba.
Several folk ventured on to MacAlister Springs in November and set up their tents in the snow ( it was reported that a certain Range Rover was idled for several hours one morning to keep the humans warm ).
A group went onto Mt Bogong for an overnight camp in March to help the Mt Beauty Lions Club ** great weekend I would say.

Membership
Thanks to those members who have subscribed again - we greatly appreciate your support. The new membership system is working well - you should be notified by email 1 month before expiration, on the actual day your membership expires and another one in the month post membership expiry.
The largest cost we incur is insurance renewal - we had to provide an estimate a few months ago of the number of members we will require insurance for and of course based our estimates on the number of financial members at that time. Members are our life blood. You can help us meet the insurance bill by renewing your membership.
If you are unsure as to when you are financial to you can login to the website and access your profile to find out. If you need help send Tony an email or give him a ring. Please contact Tony if you are experiencing any issues with renewing your membership.
To renew choose the Join, Renew Membership now menu path.
Please note that renewing members should complete and submit an annual acknowledgement of risks form. This only needs to be done once and then this releases you from having to sign a risk form for each event. If you've recently renewed and missed the acknowledgement of risk form you can find it here

Keeping Up to Date with MVB Events
Lots has been happening as usual! Given that creation of bulletins is just a tad irregular and that many events are posted with short notice here are some tips to stay up to date with whats on offer and whats been going down.
The Event Calendar on the website always contains the most up to date listing of events - if its not on the calendar it doesn't happen! There is a mini calendar on the clubs homepage and a larger version of it available under the Program, Event Calendar menu item
The clubs Flickr website has an extraordinary photo documentation of our events - we are rapidly approaching 6000 photos - photos are ordered by event date and name in albums - here is a list of all photo albums.
All the photos you see on the website and in bulletins are actually stored on Flickr and just easily linked to. What an incredible resource for documenting our activities this is!
The clubs Facebook site - we have 97 Likes and hope to get to the 100 mark before the AGM - members often post photos and commentary live during club events. Its a fantastic way of interacting with our members and friends.
We also have a site on Youtube for posting videos (abseiling at the moment) and our events are also made available on Ecoportal
